Pain, healing and aftercare after cosmetic tattoo removal

For brows, numbing goes on about an hour before a 5–10 minute laser pass that most clients rate 2–4 out of 10; a light frosting fades within hours, a scab or flaking may follow over days 1–3, and healing usually takes 24–72 hours. After any area, skip sun, makeup, heavy sweating, saunas and hot tubs for 48 hours.

Does eyebrow tattoo or microblading removal hurt?

For brow removal, most clients rate the discomfort at 2–4 out of 10. Topical numbing goes on first and is given time to work, the area is cooled while the laser runs, and the laser part lasts 5–10 minutes. Numbing is included for eyeliner and lip sessions too, with the area fully numbed for eyeliner, and the laser part of those visits is short, a few minutes for eyeliner.

If you are nervous about it, say so. One of Neoderma's microblading patients put their session at about a 3 or 4 out of 10, “not bad at all, definitely bearable”, after telling the nurse how nervous they were beforehand.

Eyebrow tattoo removal healing process, stage by stage

For brows, healing usually takes 24–72 hours. Here is what each stage tends to look like, and where eyeliner and lips differ:

  • Right after a session. A light frosting appears over a treated brow and fades within a few hours. On lips, expect some swelling: they are thin, mucosal and full of blood vessels, so they swell more readily than brows. It is normal and settles as they heal.
  • Days 1–3. On brows a light scab or some flaking may form, and on lips a light scab. Leave it alone and let it fall away when it is ready.
  • The weeks that follow. The pigment carries on fading while the skin settles, and sessions are spaced 6–8 weeks apart.
  • Your next session. Once the area has healed you come back, and your provider adjusts the plan to how your pigment has responded so far.

Neoderma sends you home with written aftercare and its phone number. It covers what to avoid for the first 48 hours, sun protection, and what healing should look like week by week, so you can tell normal from not. Your aftercare products are included in the session price, for brows, eyeliner and lip blush alike.

Aftercare for brow, eyeliner and lip removal: the 48-hour list

The list is the same for brows, eyeliner and lips:

  • Direct sun on the treated area
  • Makeup on the treated skin
  • Heavy sweating
  • Saunas and hot tubs

One instruction matters more than the rest: if a light scab forms, don't pick at it. Pulling scabs off early is the most common way a routine heal leaves something behind.

Before your appointment

  • Arrive about an hour early, so the numbing has time to work.
  • For brows, come with your natural brow color. Don't tint the brow hair beforehand.
  • For eyeliner, don't tint or dye anything around the eyes ahead of the visit.
  • For lips, wear no lipstick, tint, stain or other lip product.
  • If you have tried saline removal or a removal cream somewhere else, mention it. The skin is looked at before any laser either way.

All of these come down to one thing: your provider needs to see the real color of the pigment to treat it accurately.

The two 90-day rules

A fresh tattoo waits 90 days. Brows, eyeliner or lip color that were done recently have to heal fully before removal begins, because treating skin that hasn't finished healing raises the risk of scarring. Three months can feel long when you dislike what you see in the mirror; it is still the right wait.

New work waits about 90 days after your last removal session. The skin needs to recover completely before it is tattooed again. If an artist is already booked, mention it at the consultation, and Neoderma will plan your sessions around that date and coordinate the timing with your artist.

What are the risks, and how are they managed?

Neoderma says the possible side effects of laser tattoo removal may include redness, swelling, pigmentary (skin-color) changes, infection, scabbing, scarring, crusting, bruising, itching, flaking or blistering, and it reviews your health history before treating you.

The specific risk of the wrong settings is oxidation. Some brow inks containing iron oxide or titanium dioxide can turn gray, blue or darker, and the wrong settings can drive eyeliner and lip pigments darker too; that is difficult to undo, so the pigment type is assessed before treatment and test-spotted when that's indicated. With brows, the other risk is a laser aimed at the follicle instead of the pigment, which is how brow hair gets lost. The margin for error near the eyes is small, which is why experience with this kind of work matters.

Neoderma's precautions: medical-grade shields over the eyes for any work near the lash line; a 90-day wait on fresh tattoos, because treating skin that hasn't healed raises the risk of scarring; scabs left to come away on their own; licensed medical providers for every removal, with physician oversight from Dr. Sal Nadkarni, DO; and lasers serviced and calibrated on a regular manufacturer schedule.

Healing and aftercare FAQ

How long does eyebrow tattoo removal take to heal?

Usually 24–72 hours. The light frosting fades within a few hours, a light scab or some flaking may form over days 1–3, and once the brow has healed the next session follows 6–8 weeks after the last.

Can I wear makeup after cosmetic tattoo removal?

Not on the treated skin for 48 hours. Keep direct sun off the area for those two days as well, and stay out of saunas and hot tubs and away from heavy sweating.

Does the pigment fade straight away?

Not all at once. The pigment keeps fading in the weeks after each session, and the next one comes once the area has healed, 6–8 weeks later.
