Cosmetic tattoo removal takes out permanent makeup (PMU): microblading and other brow tattoos, permanent eyeliner and lip blush. Neoderma in Anaheim uses the PicoWay laser, which shatters pigment for the body to clear while sparing hair follicles. Brows and lips are $350 a session; eyeliner is $795 for the first session and $595 after, and most clients need 2–4.

What kinds of cosmetic tattoos can be removed?

Every common kind, with the same laser. Each area still has its own page, because brows, eyelids and lips each behave differently, and eyeliner is priced higher.

Why people come in

Why does cosmetic ink stop looking right?

Most people who come in did their research and loved the result at first, then watched the ink change on its own.

“It turned gray, blue or salmon.”

Cosmetic pigment is blended to look warm on the day it heals, and the warm tones tend to go first, so what's left can read blue, gray or ashy; older brow work can also drift to salmon. It happens to careful work too.

“The lines blurred and spread.”

Ink sits in living skin and drifts a little past where it was placed. Fine brow strokes soften into each other, and a crisp eyeliner widens into a smudge that reads as tired.

“The style moved on.”

The bold, filled-in brow of the late 2010s now reads dated beside softer, fluffier, more textured brows, and liner drawn for an older trend, thicker or more winged, can quietly age a face.

“I'm scared of losing my brows or lashes.”

PicoWay is aimed at the pigment, not the hair follicle, so natural brow hair and lashes are not what it works on. Hair loss comes from aiming at the follicle, which is a matter of technique.

The laser

How does PicoWay remove cosmetic ink?

PicoWay is a picosecond laser. Its pulses last trillionths of a second, and at that speed the energy breaks pigment apart mechanically, as a pressure wave, instead of heating it; your body then clears the fragments by itself. Less heat matters around the eyes, where the skin is thin, and it is also why the follicles in a brow aren't damaged.

Cosmetic pigment behaves differently from body ink. It isn't standardized between artists, brands or decades, and some brow inks contain iron oxide or titanium dioxide, which can oxidize and turn gray, blue or darker under the wrong settings. So Neoderma assesses the pigment type before treating and test-spots when that's indicated.

The device brings three full-power wavelengths: 1064 nm for deep black, 785 nm for stubborn blues and greens, and 532 nm for reds, oranges and yellows. Neoderma picked PicoWay over PicoSure because mixed brow pigments call for that range; its PicoWay vs. PicoSure article compares the two.

Straight answers

Before you book: what people ask about cosmetic tattoo removal

Six short answers, each linked to the page that covers it in full.

Can permanent makeup really be removed?

Yes. Neoderma treats microblading, powder, ombré, nano and combination brows, permanent eyeliner and lip blush with PicoWay, clearing or lightening pigment that has aged gray, blue, red or salmon.

What kinds of brow tattoos can be removed

Will I lose my brow hair or lashes?

PicoWay targets the pigment rather than the hair follicle, so natural brow hair and lashes are not affected. Hair loss happens when the follicle is treated instead of the pigment, a question of technique.

Brow hair and removal

How many sessions does it take?

Most clients need 2–4 sessions, spaced 6–8 weeks apart; light microblading often takes 1–2, deep machine work 4 or more. Older, lighter work has sometimes cleared in a single session, but Neoderma can't guarantee it.

Sessions by type of brow work

What does cosmetic tattoo removal cost?

Eyebrow and lip blush removal are $350 a session, and eyeliner removal is $795 for the first session and $595 for each session after, with numbing and aftercare products included every time. Financing is available through Cherry and CareCredit.

Do you offer saline, removal creams or at-home removal?

No. For brows and eyeliner the PicoWay laser is the only removal method Neoderma offers, and lip blush is treated with PicoWay too; if you have tried saline or a cream elsewhere, mention it at your consultation.

Before your appointment

Is the consultation free?

No. The consultation is $50, credited toward treatment if you proceed within two weeks of the consultation. Booking online sends a short request, and Neoderma's team contacts you to confirm.

Full removal, or lightening for new work?

You don't have to take everything off. Plenty of Neoderma's brow and lip clients want the old work lightened rather than cleared: enough to correct a color that has gone cool, or to hand a new artist a clean canvas. That is a shorter plan, with fewer sessions and a lower total.

If new work is the goal, say so when you book. Neoderma will coordinate timing with your artist, and the skin needs about 90 days after your last removal session before it is tattooed again; the two 90-day rules explain why.

In patients' words

What do Neoderma's brow-removal patients say?

“I came to Neoderma to get laser removal for my microbladed eyebrows. I did a lot of research and ended up choosing Neoderma because they use the Picoway laser and the cost was reasonable … I live in LA so it's about an hour away .. but it's honestly worth the drive! … Melissa was my nurse and she was so sweet! I told her I was nervous about the pain level and she helped me feel at ease. … the pain level was about a 3/10 or 4/10. Not bad at all, definitely bearable. I loved my initial results, can't wait to see how my brows look when they heal!”

Emily S., on microblading removal at Neoderma

“First time visiting today for eyebrow tattoo removal and my whole experience was so lovely. … Highly recommend!!!”
