Eyebrow tattoo and microblading removal

Neoderma removes microblading, powder, ombré, nano and combination brows with the PicoWay laser, which targets the tattoo pigment rather than the hair follicle, so your natural brow hair stays. Sessions are $350 with numbing, cooling and aftercare products included; most clients need 2–4, spaced 6–8 weeks apart, and lightening for new brows is an option.

Can microblading and other eyebrow tattoos be removed?

Yes: Neoderma treats every common kind of cosmetic brow work, hand-tool or machine, including pigment that has aged into the wrong color. It regularly removes:

  • Microblading, including strokes that have blurred into one another
  • Powder, ombré, nano and combination brows
  • Deep, machine-done brow tattoos
  • Brows that turned gray, blue, red, green or salmon with age
  • Uneven, overly heavy or botched work

If you have had saline removal or used a removal cream somewhere else, tell your provider: the skin is looked at before any laser either way. Neoderma itself offers PicoWay and no other removal method.

Does microblading removal remove eyebrow hair?

PicoWay is aimed at the tattoo pigment, not the hair follicle. Its energy arrives in pulses lasting trillionths of a second and breaks the pigment up mechanically rather than by heating it, so the follicles aren't damaged and your brow hair keeps growing. Once the old pigment stops showing through, most clients think their brows look fuller.

Losing brow hair is the fear Neoderma hears most, usually because someone was told elsewhere that it comes with removal, or that leftover color can't be taken out at all. Hair loss happens when the laser works on the follicle instead of the pigment. Neoderma treats that as a question of technique, not a rule of removal.

Why does microblading change color?

Brow pigment is formulated to look warm and natural on the day it heals. Over the following years the warm tones tend to go first, and what's left can read blue, gray, red or green. It is chemistry, not a sign that your artist made a mistake, and it happens to beautifully executed brows as well.

The “semi-permanent” label describes the result you were meant to have, not the pigment. Microblading is generally sold as lasting one to three years, and what lasts that long is the crisp, intended version; leftover pigment can stay far longer, sometimes a decade, as a soft shadow that waiting won't shift. Tastes changed in the meantime: next to today's softer, fluffier, more textured brows, the bold, filled-in, symmetrical brow of the late 2010s can read dated. If you were microbladed somewhere between 2016 and 2021 and don't love the result now, you are in good company; Neoderma sees it every week.

What if my brows turned orange, red or salmon?

Red and yellow are among the hardest colors for many lasers to clear. Neoderma is able to target and break them down, and other clinics send it clients whose residual color they have had difficulty removing.

Stuck pigment, warm or gray, is usually a limit of the device or its wavelength rather than of your skin. PicoWay's 532 nm wavelength is the one for reds, oranges and yellows, while 785 nm takes on stubborn blues and greens and 1064 nm deep black. Cosmetic inks can also contain iron oxides and titanium dioxide, which behave differently from body-tattoo ink, so your provider assesses the pigment type first and test-spots when that's indicated.

Can botched microblading be fixed?

Yes, and fixing it is one of the treatments Neoderma is asked for most. Uneven shapes, color that went gray, blue, red or green, and work that is just too heavy can all be removed or lightened.

What rarely helps is the first thing most people try, which is going back for another microblading session. Fresh strokes laid over blurred ones add density rather than definition, and on brows that have gone dark, gray or ashy, more pigment tends to make the problem worse; it is very hard to lighten tattooed skin by tattooing it again. If a brow is significantly too thick, too low or lopsided, a corrective session can only do so much.

That leaves three realistic routes. You can wait for it to fade, which is slow and often incomplete. You can have it covered or corrected, which suits some cases but not most. Or you can have it lightened or removed with a laser.

Full removal, or lightening for new brows?

Both are possible. Many brow clients don't want bare skin; they want the old work lightened enough to fix a color that went cool, or to give a new artist a clean canvas. Lightening is a shorter plan with fewer sessions, so it costs less, and Neoderma tailors the number of sessions to the result you are after.

When new brows are the goal, the skin needs about 90 days after your last removal session before it is tattooed again, and Neoderma will coordinate the timing with your brow artist. Brows that were only just done have to wait too: removal starts 90 days after a fresh tattoo, once it has fully healed. Both waits are explained in the two 90-day rules.

How many sessions does it take to remove microblading?

Most clients need 2–4 sessions, spaced 6–8 weeks apart. The deeper and denser the pigment, the more sessions it takes:

Typical number of PicoWay sessions by type of brow tattoo at Neoderma Advanced Skin Care
Type of brow workTypical sessions
Light microblading1–2 sessions
Medium saturation: powder, ombré and combination brows3–4 sessions
Deep, machine-done brow tattoos4 or more

These are typical ranges, not promises, because everyone is different: some people are pleased after one session, while others need several. Some older, lighter brows have cleared in a single session, but Neoderma can't guarantee it, because it has no control over what the artist put into your skin: the shade, any additives, the pigment's quality and how many passes of color went in. Brows that were touched up carry several layers in several colors and need more sessions.

You get an estimate at the consultation, after your provider has looked at the pigment, and it is adjusted as your brows respond. Neoderma's stated aim is the fewest sessions that get you to the result, and the count for your own brows is always set in person.

How much does eyebrow tattoo or microblading removal cost?

Each session is $350, with topical numbing, cooling and all your aftercare products included. Using the typical counts above, light microblading usually comes to $350–$700 in total, and deeper work to $1,400 or more; lightening for new brows can take fewer sessions. Financing is available through Cherry and CareCredit.

What happens at a brow removal appointment?

Arrive about an hour early, because topical numbing goes on first and needs time to work. The laser itself takes 5–10 minutes, with cooling while it runs, and most clients put the discomfort at 2–4 out of 10.

Right afterwards a light frosting shows over the brow and fades within a few hours. Over the next one to three days a light scab or some flaking may form; leave it to come away on its own. Healing usually takes 24–72 hours, and the next session follows once the brow has healed, 6–8 weeks later.

Come with your natural brow color, and don't tint the brow hair beforehand. The eyebrow tattoo removal healing process, stage by stage, covers what each stage looks like, plus the 48-hour aftercare list.

“I came to Neoderma to get laser removal for my microbladed eyebrows. I did a lot of research and ended up choosing Neoderma because they use the Picoway laser and the cost was reasonable … I live in LA so it's about an hour away .. but it's honestly worth the drive! … Melissa was my nurse and she was so sweet! I told her I was nervous about the pain level and she helped me feel at ease. … the pain level was about a 3/10 or 4/10. Not bad at all, definitely bearable. I loved my initial results, can't wait to see how my brows look when they heal!”

Eyebrow tattoo removal FAQ

Can powder or ombré brows be removed?

Yes. Powder, ombré and combination brows are treated with the same PicoWay laser as microblading. They are usually more saturated, so they typically take 3–4 sessions rather than the 1–2 that light microblading often needs.

Does microblading removal leave scars?

Scarring is one of the possible side effects of any laser tattoo removal. Neoderma won't treat brows that are still healing from a fresh tattoo, because that raises the risk, and asks you to let any scab come away by itself, because picking at it is how an easy heal ends up leaving a lasting mark.

Risks and how they are managed

How soon after microblading can I start removal?

Not for 90 days. Your brows have to heal completely first, because treating skin that hasn't finished healing raises the risk of side effects such as scarring.

The two 90-day rules

Should I tint my brows before my appointment?

No. Arrive with your natural brow color, so your provider can see the tattoo pigment clearly.

Can a removal that stalled elsewhere be finished?

It may be. Finishing removals that stalled elsewhere is a large part of Neoderma's brow work: stuck color is usually a limit of the device or its wavelength, and warm and gray residues respond to the right wavelength at true picosecond pulses.
